Life gets complicated and stressful. There is no doubt about it! But we get so lost in our daily lives that we forget to care for ourselves. We can never truly be balanced and happy if we are always stressed. All that stress implies that something in your life is making you unhappy. By finding ways to relieve stress, you can feel comfortable and content with your life again.

Here are some great hobbies to help you relieve your stress and find happiness and peace in your life again!

1. Meditation

What kind of list would this be if meditation wasn’t on it? Meditation is probably the most well-known method for relieving stress.

Meditation is one of the best ways to get out of your head and relax. You can allow all your stress to flow away. It takes some time to get the hang of, but if you are looking for a way to relieve stress, this should be your go-to.

2. Gardening

Gardening isn’t for everyone, but it can be really relaxing if you give it a chance.

First off, plants can make really good roommates. They don’t steal your food or throw parties in the middle of the night, but they still provide you with a little bit of company so that you aren’t quite alone.

Taking care of plants can be relaxing too. You are creating a beautiful garden, which has no deadline or rules to worry about. Even if your plants are the easiest ones to take care of, it’s still nice to contribute to something other than your job for once.

3. Candle Making

Candles are so relaxing. I just have to imagine a beautifully lit room with plenty of candles to destress. Now, think of how relaxing it would be to make your own candles.

Playing with the wax and shaping it how you want is so satisfying. It would be really great to create your own candles. You get to pick your colours and shapes. Candle making can be great for stress relief.

4. Finger Painting

Painting is stressful because it requires some knowledge of technique and plenty of tools. But when you take out all of the difficulty, painting can be lots of fun. Finger painting has no rules. You can paint whatever you want. By having that control over something, you can easily feel like you have more control in your life.

In addition, finger painting is a good outlet. You can get out all of your frustrations by painting them away!

5. Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a physical exercise that is great for helping to relieve stress. It is a series of slow movements along with deep breathing. It doesn’t have to be too fast or too complicated. Like yoga, you can get some exercise while also destressing.

Tai Chi might be exactly what you need to get some exercise in your daily life. (I know most of you spend your day sitting down. Don’t lie.) You’ll find exactly what you are looking for with Tai Chi.

6. Yoga

Yoga, like any other form of exercise, takes practice and time to be good at it. However, when you finally have enough flexibility and strength, you’ll find that yoga is great for stress relief. You can stretch until your heart’s content or at least until you feel a little less stressed.

Yoga is one of the top activities we think about when we want to relax. You can get into a groove and take your mind off of everything that’s bothering you.

7. Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking might not be the top hobby for destressing, but it sure makes for a good one.

First, little activities, like scrapbooking, are a perfect distraction from whatever you are trying to avoid. Distractions can be great for relieving stress quickly.

The greatest part about scrapbooking, however, is getting to go through your happiest memories. Nothing cheers me up like looking through pictures of happy moments.

8. Origami

Origami isn’t the most obvious hobby for this list, but I am sure you’ll still have fun with it. It is a great hobby to help distract you from your daily stresses. You don’t have any other choice but to concentrate on it.

However, I’ll give you a warning. If you are easily frustrated, origami might not be for you. It does take some patience to learn because it requires precise folds of the paper. Just keep that in mind.

9. Pottery

Pottery can be such a great activity for stress relief. Bending and shaping the clay is soothing. You get to choose what you want to create. In a world where we are all stressed because of our lack of choices, it can be freeing to have complete control over the clay. You might love creating your new items too.

Furthermore, it’s a great distraction from your everyday life. Pottery is great for relieving stress.

10. Colouring

There are plenty of colouring books geared toward adults because they are indeed great for stress relief.

You have to concentrate on what you are colouring when you use an adult colouring book (because they are so detailed and a little complicated). With all the little things in the pictures, you have no choice but to focus all of your energy and thoughts on colouring them in.

11. Puzzles

Like a lot of other activities on this list, doing puzzles is one way to distract you from your stressful life. When you are distracted, you can’t think about all the things you are trying to avoid. Even if you only get half an hour of stress-free time, it might be exactly what you need.

Puzzles allow you to concentrate on something else and to get out of your head for a short time.

12. Knitting

Knitting is one of those things that you can do without thinking. It is a series of repetitive actions, which can be a really good thing when you don’t want to focus on anything.

With knitting, you can give yourself that moment of peace that you have been looking for. You might even create some beautiful items and clothing along the way.

There are plenty of hobbies and activities that you can start participating in to help you relieve stress. Your daily life gets incredibly stressful and taxing but you can’t let your work, home life, chores or anything else keep you from caring for yourself. Lots of stress isn’t great for you. It is best to focus on getting your stress levels down so that you can have a comfortable and happy life. Try these hobbies and be stress-free again!

  1. That’s a good list. I personally engage in a few of these to help relieve stress: gardening, painting, and crocheting (instead of knitting). There’s something about creating something and having that control and to create something beautiful that helps to relax your soul.

  2. Love this post! Not only is it helpful and informative, you threw in some humour (plants don’t steal your food or party lol). I laughed. I will for sure try some of these suggestions to help when I am feeling stressed!

  3. I never thought about engaging in a hobby to relieve stress! I try to meditate and practice yoga but as with anything else these practices are the first to get dropped when things get hectic (which is when I need them most!).
I would also love to enroll in a pottery class! Great ideas, thanks for sharing!

    1. I have a bad wrist and can’t do yoga (at least to its full extent), so I have to come up with other ideas to relieve stress. There are so many ways to relieve stress. You just have to look for them!

  4. These are such great ideas to relieve stress! Finger painting and colouring really appeal to me, I must still be a kid at heart. I remember how awesome it felt to use your fingers to spread the paint around on the paper when I was a child. Thank you for sharing!

  5. Some of these are on my list, too. A couple are MORE stressful (jigsaw puzzles seem to drive me up a wall for some reason, but my family loves them). I would add walking or hiking. A good walk just helps organize my brain and my neurons.

  6. Love coloring and puzzles! My 9 year old granddaughter just started scrapbooking and that was the whole theme from us for Christmas this year. Fitness is top on my list to relieve stress. Great list.

    1. Fitness and scrapbooking are both great ideas! I’m glad to hear everyone has something they can do to relieve their stress. 🙂
