Cheap hobbies aren’t that easy to come by! Hobbies, like painting and even bullet journaling, can cost hundreds of dollars over a few years. Some hobbies can take thousands of dollars! With time, tools for your hobbies have started to cost more and more. That’s why you need to start looking into cheap hobbies!

Cheap hobbies are perfect for people with a small budget. They won’t cost you anything and you get to enjoy your new skills!

1. Photography

Photography has become a well-liked hobby with the increasing popularity of social media apps, like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. Because of that, photography might be the exact hobby you need!

Lucky for us, photography has become super easy. We are always attached to our phones and electronics now, which all have cameras! It won’t cost you anything extra to use your phone for photography.

Even better news, phones have editing abilities. I know that iPhones can adjust the exposure, highlights, shadows, etc. of your photos. It takes some trial and error but learning how to edit your photos on your phone is easy!

2. Walking

Getting exercise is always a great activity, especially when it’s free! You can never go wrong with walking. I love to go walking around my neighbourhood during the summer. Early in the morning, it’s warm without being sweltering and there is a lot of sunlight.

Walking is definitely one of the cheap hobbies that won’t cost you anything! You can wear your regular clothes and your shoes. Most people prefer yoga pants and running shoes but walking doesn’t require any special equipment or clothes.

Walking around your neighbourhood won’t cost you a thing, so it’s worth a try!

3. Dancing

I love dancing around my house (and occasionally in public) but anyone who has ever seen me dance will say that I don’t have any dancing skills! It doesn’t matter! As long as I’m happy, I don’t care.

Lucky for me and all of you, dancing doesn’t come with a cost. Some dance styles require more equipment. For example, to tap dance, you need tap shoes. But for the most part, you can dance without any problems.

There are even free dance lessons on YouTube. You want to dance like a K-Pop star; there are instructional videos for that. You want to do Zumba; you can find a video for that too.

Dance is a great hobby when you are low on cash!

4. Reading

Reading is one of my favourite hobbies! I’ve made that pretty clear with all my other hobby lists.

Most of the time people think of reading as an expensive hobby. Nowadays, books can go for 20-40 dollars. It’s not the easiest hobby to afford. However, there are still ways to read without having to pay a dime!

First, you could borrow your books from friends and family. I’m sure someone will be willing to lend you a book. A little warning: don’t get mad at someone for not letting you borrow a book. Books are precious and easily damaged. Just move on and ask someone else.

The best way to read with no money is to read free e-books. I’ve read so many great books for free over the years. No, they might not be as amazing as the ones you spend the big bucks on but they are still good. You can try Wattpad, iBooks, etc.

5. Yoga

Yoga is the kind of thing that you can do for little to no cost! Yes, there is the problem with yoga mats. Most people prefer a yoga mat, but it isn’t necessary. You might slide around a little bit and your hands might hurt from a hard floor, but you can still make it work!

Now, not everyone knows how to do yoga. There are so many different poses to learn! But YouTube can easily fix that problem! There are thousands of videos on how to do yoga and they’re all free!

Yoga is great for your mental and physical health. The fact that it is one of these cheap hobbies is just the cherry on top!

6. Singing

I feel like this one is pretty obviously free. You don’t need anything but your voice to sing! I love singing in my day-to-day life (which means every moment of the day)! And it’s a good thing that it doesn’t cost anything because I would be massively in debt by now.

You don’t have to be good at singing to enjoy it! If you want to improve your skills, like other cheap hobbies on this list, there are YouTube videos to give you helpful advice. Music lessons would probably be more effective since they are tailored to you. But YouTube videos are a great way to get started!

7. Listening to Podcast/Music

Podcasts and music are in abundance! You’ll never be at a lack for podcasts or music. It is super simple to find too!

Spotify offers free services so that you can listen to music and podcast whenever you want! You might have to listen to a few ads in between songs and episodes but if you can get it for free, that’s worth it!

Don’t forget to look up podcasts too. There are plenty of free podcasts for you to listen to out there! You just need to look for them.

YouTube is always a great source of music. I’m sure you could find some podcast recordings on there too!

8. Stand-Up Comedy

Stand-up comedy is definitely free! You might even make money from it if you can get a gig.

Not everyone is a comedian. It takes certain kinds of skills to be able to do stand-up comedy, like a lot of confidence and actually being funny. But if you meet those criteria, you are set!

Comedy won’t cost you anything. (Unless you have to buy your jokes!) All you need to do is come up with some jokes, find a place to perform (open mic nights are a pretty good start), and make the audience laugh.

Now, that last part, making people laugh, is probably the hardest. It’ll take you a while to get comfortable in front of a crowd. Just don’t give up and keep trying!

9. Improv

Improv is certainly one of the cheap hobbies because it doesn’t require anything! You might need props occasionally but improv is typically based solely on imagination.

Now, I have never really done improv before so I can’t guarantee that some costs don’t apply. Some groups might ask that you pay a membership fee or pay to have your own team jersey. But if those costs are too high, you can always create your own group.

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. A few friends getting together a few times a month is good enough as long as you are enjoying it!

10. Language Learning

Learning a new language isn’t exactly associated with low costs. Typically you would have to hire a tutor or spend a lot of money on recordings. (“Le papillon est très beau. Now, you say it.”)

But as the world has evolved, so has our way of learning new languages. There are lots of apps out there that are ready to teach you a new language whenever you want. And they’re free!! (For the most part, until you hit higher levels).

You can work on it for fifteen minutes a day if that’s what you want! The apps make it super simple for you to learn a new language without having to pay an arm and a leg.

Finding cheap hobbies is like finding a needle in a haystack. They are few and far between! You’ll start a new hobby and before you know it, you’ll have invested hundreds of dollars. Yet, there are hobbies out there that cost nothing. You simply need to look for them! What hobbies do you like to do? Let me know in the comments!
