Christmas is such a wonderful time of year! But it isn’t just special because of the presents. There is so much more to this season! It is a time of giving, helping others, and enjoying your time with family and friends. It’s these activities that make Christmas special. There are plenty of hobbies to try around Christmas time that can help you have the perfect Christmas with your friends and family! Sometimes sharing our time with others and just enjoying our experiences is exactly what we need!
1. Volunteering
Volunteering is the perfect hobby to pick up around Christmas time!
Christmas is the season of giving back both to your community and to the people you know. Volunteering is an amazing way to do that!
Around this time of year, people start to consider how they can help others. The Christmas cheers get into our veins and we want to participate more now than ever.
Volunteering might not be a hobby you like to do regularly but around Christmas time, it might be exactly what you should be doing!
2. Crafting
I don’t know why or how, but somehow, Christmas time seems to be when people like to craft the most. Crafts stores (and most other stores) are so much busier around this time of year because people suddenly feel the urge to craft.
It might have something to do with all of the available activities. When it comes to Christmas crafting, there are so many options. You could decorate some ornaments, create a wreath, design shirts, and so much more. It’s simply that time of year!
If you are looking to start up a new hobby, crafting is one of the great hobbies to try around Christmas time. This time of year somehow just screams glitter (perfect for any craft you have in mind)!
3. Card Making
If you can’t make cards at Christmas, I’m not sure when you could!
Christmas is the only time of year that I associate with sending cards (other than birthdays). And that is because it is mainly a seasonal thing to do. You want to wish people a merry Christmas but you might not see them in person, which is where the cards come in.
A personalized letter to your loved ones can be such a wonderful gift! By creating a card yourself, not only are you telling the recipients that you care enough to put in the effort and time, but you are also making them feel special and loved.
Card making is just the perfect hobby for Christmas!
4. Reading
What kind of Christmas list would this be if I didn’t include reading?! Or maybe it’s just me. Christmas time is probably when I like to read the most. I typically get a little break from work or school. Then I realize how much reading I have to catch up on! So my Christmas break is consumed by reading.
Christmas books come out every year and I love to read them, as I know others do too. I have been eyeing The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox recently. Who doesn’t love a classic sisters swap places story? There are so many Christmas romance books to choose from!
You might enjoy a more classic Christmas story, like T’was the Night Before Christmas. It doesn’t matter what you choose to read as long as you enjoy it.
5. Knitting/Crocheting
Knitting and crocheting are some great hobbies to try around Christmas time!
First and foremost, a good reason to start this hobby for Christmas is that it’s cold outside. If there was ever a good time for a new blanket, a hat, some mittens, etc., it would be now. All these things to keep you warm are not quite as useful in the summer.
You might also find that things you have knit or crocheted make for great Christmas gifts. Someone will really appreciate all the effort you put into their gift.
If you want to keep up with the giving spirit of the season, you can donate your creations to homeless shelters and to families who need the supplies. Creating gifts and donating them is always a great way to spend your time!
6. Baking
Baking is probably my favourite hobby for this time of year! Christmas isn’t complete without cookies! A lot of people would agree with me.
The most notable sweet to bake for Christmas is gingerbread. Baking gingerbread cookies, whether they be gingerbread men or a house, is common for this season.
There is always the added bonus of a warm oven with plenty of warm cookies for you to eat when it’s cold outside.
7. Ice Skating
Some people skate all throughout the year (because of hockey or figure skating) but the only time a lot of us skate is when the outdoor arenas freeze over. I can’t say I’m much of a skater but the Christmas spirit does some magical things.
Around this time of year, I suddenly feel like it’s time to do a bunch of cold outdoor activities. I have been known to throw a few snowballs in my time. Skating is just one of those things that I like to do at Christmas.
After Christmas passed, the cold weather starts to drain us all, so it is better to enjoy the outdoor activities while you will still have fun with them.
Bring some family and friends along and try ice skating this Christmas season!
8. Singing
I have never been carolling in my life (though I have sung in some Christmas shows) and I don’t know very many people who have gone carolling either. But movies depict it as such an important part of people’s Christmas experience.
Singing Christmas carols makes this time of year feel special! It wouldn’t feel the same without all the Christmas music!
That makes it the best time to either start singing or practice your skills. Because it’s Christmas, everyone else is singing too. You don’t have to be embarrassed if you aren’t the greatest singer in the room.
Don’t get too worked up about how you sound and just enjoy it!
9. Photography/Videography
If there ever was a time to take up photography and videography, it would be around Christmas. They are both great hobbies to try around Christmas time!
With all of your family around you, you can get some great pictures and videos of everyone having fun.
Every year at Christmas, my family and I would take pictures on the steps at my grandfather’s house. I wouldn’t replace those pictures with anything. They mean so much now that we aren’t all together.
Christmas is the perfect time to make memories. Pictures and videos help you to document those memories for years to come!
10. Play Games
Board games are fun all year-round but Christmas time is when people are more dedicated to spending time with family. Nothing says family time like a good game night!
Playing board games is the perfect activity to pick up for Christmas. You might lose a few rounds and you might win some, but as long as you get to spend time with family and friends, it doesn’t matter!
And if you decide to practice your board game skills, you might just find yourself winning more games than before!
Christmas is such a special time of year! You get and give presents. You can spend time with your family. There is just so much to Christmas! But sometimes we need to put a little more effort into making this time of year extra special! Check out these amazing hobbies to try around Christmas time! Let me know which hobby you want to do in the comments!
